Regenerative Farming
Here at Grazed by the Tyne we are constantly learning and modifying how we raise our livestock and care for the land. As we have evolved are practices, we have found ourselves falling into the category of ‘regenerative farmers’.
‘Regen Farming’ is the new and trendy buzzword in farming. Although not defined easily, generally speaking it is an approach to food and farming focused on:
soil regeneration
increasing biodiversity
improving the water cycles
enhancing ecosystems
increasing resilience to a changing climate
Most importantly whilst still producing high quality food!
We are great believers in this more holistic approach to farming which in our opinion finds the right balance between sustainability, environmentalism whilst still producing nutritious food from the land (unlike rewilding!)
So how do we practice ‘Regen’ at Grazed by the Tyne?
Rotational grazing
Sown mixed herbal ley which increases the grasslands species diversity
Moving away from chemical farming by minimising uses of herbicides and anthelmintics
The benefits
We have noticed the land is more productive as we are able to grow more grass with this new holistic approach, whilst also reducing the artificial inputs required.
It has also been a pleasure to see more pollinators in our fields this summer enjoying the diverse pastoral landscape.
We also believe that by looking after the land through regenerative grazing we are not only improving the quality of the soil and environment, but we are also producing a more nutritious and delicious product in the form of our lamb, beef and honey.
We hope you can enjoy the benefits too!
